Sumi Patriots Day was commemorated in Zunheboto with moving tributes to General Kaito Sukhai and other Sümi heroes, honoring their legacy and sacrifice.
The spirit of patriotism resonated across Zunheboto today as Sumi Patriots Day was solemnly observed at the Patriots’ Monolith Point in Alahuto Colony Junction. Organized by the All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK), the event served as a heartfelt homage to the sacrifices made by Sümi patriots, most notably General Kaito Sukhai.
Delivering the keynote address, SKK President Gihuka Zhimomi emphasized the historical relevance of the day. He stated that the remembrance of General Kaito’s sacrifice must serve as a guiding light for students and youth. “True education goes beyond textbooks — it includes knowing our people’s struggles and honoring those who fought for justice,” he said.

A Legacy Beyond the Battlefield
Dr. Vihuto Asumi, President of the Sumi Hoho, traced the origins of the day, highlighting its transition from “Sümi Youth Day” to “Sümi Patriots’ Day” in 1997. He paid tribute to General Kaito Sukhai, who became the youngest Naga general at just 22. Notably, he was interviewed by the BBC in London in 1962 and was fatally shot on August 3, 1968, passing away the following day in Kohima.
Dr. Asumi underscored that the day is not just a remembrance of one man but a symbolic recognition of collective courage. “Their sacrifices demand that we stay united and rise above narrow interests. Patriotism lives not only in the battlefield but also in the classroom, church, farmland, and public service,” he said.
Call for Cultural and Political Integrity
Hetoho S. Zhimomi, President of the Sumi Kukami Hoho, urged schools and colleges to preserve the Sümi language “Sütsa” by including it in academic curricula. He also encouraged the public to use the Right to Information Act responsibly and called upon political groups to represent the will of the people with integrity.
STH Vice President Husheli Zhimo addressed the youth, affirming that attending such commemorations is part of holistic education. “Knowing your roots is equally important as academic excellence,” she said.
A Day of Reflection and Resolve
The event, chaired by SKK General Secretary Toshika K. Kiba, included prayers, songs, and spiritual messages. A special performance by Kheks Naga and a concluding benediction by Pastor Vihepu Zhimo added a reflective atmosphere to the program.
