Hornbill TV has strongly condemned the attack on its reporter Dip Saikia, who was shot on August 30. The incident occurred while he was on assignment in Laili village, Senapati district, Manipur.
In an official letter addressed to the editors of Nagaland newspapers, the channel described the attack as “a direct assault on press freedom and democratic values.” It noted that journalists often risk their lives to bring truth to the public. It also stressed that violence against media professionals cannot be tolerated in a society that values justice, transparency, and accountability. Call for Justice and Protection
Hornbill TV urged the Government of Nagaland, Government of Manipur, law enforcement agencies, and all relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. The channel demanded that the assailant and accomplices be swiftly brought to justice. It warned that crimes against journalists must not go unpunished.

The statement also extended solidarity to Saikia’s family. It wished him a speedy and full recovery, while underlining that violence has no place in a democratic society.
Rising Concerns Over Press Freedom
The incident has reignited discussions on press freedom and the safety of journalists in Nagaland and the Northeast. Recently, Nagaland’s Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton drew criticism after publicly threatening a journalist during a village meeting The Wire report.
While groups such as RANPO defended Patton’s leadership, former MP candidate Hayithung Bill Lotha openly challenged him to a public debate on press freedom.
