The Sümi Hoho has issued a strong appeal to the Nagaland Higher Education Department, demanding the immediate revocation of faculty transfers from Zunheboto Government College. Representing the people of Zunheboto district, the organisation warned that continued staff depletion at the lone government Arts institution threatens its survival and undermines higher education in the region.
In a formal representation to Higher Education Minister Temjen Imna Along, the Sümi Hoho expressed alarm over the recent attachment of an Assistant Professor from the History Department to another location. The group noted that despite a previous appeal dated May 16, 2025 to reverse earlier faculty transfers, the Department has continued reallocating staff away from Zunheboto Government College.
A Lone Arts College at Risk
With no government Science or Commerce colleges in Zunheboto district, the Arts college plays a critical role in providing higher education. The Sümi Hoho stressed that the institution already faces staff shortages and high student enrolment, yet is losing its essential faculty while other institutions in Nagaland are being strengthened. According to the Sümi Hoho, repeated assurances from the Minister’s office and senior officials have not been honoured, amounting to what they describe as “step-motherly treatment” towards the district.
Demands and Warning
The Sümi Hoho has demanded the immediate reversal of all faculty transfers from Zunheboto Government College, warning that failure to act will prompt “firm and democratic steps” to defend the district’s educational rights.
