A face-off between Sumi Hoho President Dr. Vihuto Asumi and Zunheboto DC Dharam Raj, IAS, dominated the DPDB meeting held on August 7 at the DC Conference Hall. The discussion centered on the deteriorating state of Zunheboto Government College, with both leaders expressing sharply different views and concerns.

The meeting began with a welcome to a newly inducted board member, followed by crucial discussions on education, public service delivery, and preparations for the upcoming Independence Day celebration. Also Read Sümi Hoho Demands Action to Save Zunheboto Government College

Zunheboto Govt. College Proposes New Streams, Seeks Support

Principal Dr. R. Bendangtemjen of Zunheboto Government College presented a proposal to introduce:

  • A Sociology Department
  • Education Honours
  • Integrated B.Ed. Course
  • Science Stream

He emphasized that teacher appointments must precede the launch of these courses. “Once teachers are appointed, students will eventually come and enroll,” he stated.

The principal also appealed for departmental support to help fifth-semester students complete their 60-hour mandatory internship, a core requirement of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP). He further highlighted the poor condition of the college road, which has become waterlogged, severely affecting students and faculty.

Sumi Hoho Raises Alarm Over Faculty Transfers

Speaking strongly, Dr. Vihuto Asumi, President of Sumi Hoho, criticized the repeated transfer and attachment of faculty members from Zunheboto Government College to other institutions, saying it has weakened the only government arts college in the district.

He pointed out that despite a formal representation submitted on May 16, no action had been taken. “Even on July 30, another teacher was transferred. We are preparing to issue an open letter to the department and the concerned minister,” he said. “Why is the department giving step-motherly treatment to our lone government college?”

He also stressed the socioeconomic struggles of students who cannot afford to study outside the district. “Three faculty members have already been transferred two from History and one from Education. This is discriminatory and deeply concerning,” he added.

DC Responds with Strong Counterpoints

Addressing the board, DC Dharam Raj responded to the concerns raised by Sumi Hoho with firm but measured remarks, presenting a contrasting viewpoint. Also Read Nagaland News Today – Trusted Local News from Nagaland

He emphasized the need to end the practice of unnecessary attachments and focus on appointing more qualified teachers. “Political leaders should not be solely blamed; we must examine grassroots issues and ensure merit-based appointments,” he said.

He further added, “Public service should not be deprived or compromised. If one cannot fulfill their duties, they have every right to resign. They cannot play with the lives of our students.”

The DC underlined that while accreditation matters, quality education must come first. He also criticized faculty members going on study leave at a time when the college is already struggling with limited staff.

Independence Day & Departmental Briefing

The board also discussed departmental roles for the upcoming 79th Independence Day celebrations.

A PowerPoint presentation was made by the Land Resources Department, highlighting:

  • e-Shram scheme for building and construction workers
  • Child scholarships
  • Medical assistance schemes
  • Verification of labor beneficiaries

The Urban Development Department will give the next presentation.
