The Wakching Area Students’ Union (WASU) has extended its full support to the Konyak Students’ Union (KSU). They support the demand for a review and reform of Nagaland’s job reservation policy. The unions are pressing for changes to align reservations with the population ratio. They cite glaring disparities in employment opportunities, literacy rates, and socio-economic conditions faced by the Konyak community in Mon district.
Call for Equity in Government Jobs
According to WASU, the Konyak people one of the largest groups in Nagaland continues to face systemic marginalisation. The current reservation framework, they argue, has created frustration among educated Konyak youth. There is a lack of parity in government employment opportunities. The KSU’s demand, WASU emphasized, is not merely a policy reform request. It is a “desperate cry for justice, equity, and recognition of their rightful share.”
WASU’s Appeal to the Government
WASU has appealed to the Nagaland government to immediately review the existing job reservation system. They urge considering a population-based model through a special cabinet decision. This should happen without waiting for the release of the 2021 Census data.
The union strongly urged the government to restructure the framework. This restructuring is necessary to ensure equitable representation of the Konyak community in government jobs. Also Read When Bail Becomes a Weapon: India’s Legal Failure to Protect Survivors
A Cry That “Will Not Be Silenced”
In its press release, WASU expressed hope that the state government will heed the concerns of the Konyak community. They urge taking urgent steps to address their grievances.
“This change is crucial for achieving equitable justice. It ensures a fair representation of the Konyak community in government jobs,” WASU stated, adding:
“The cry for justice will not be silenced. We hope the government listens.”
