Sümi Totimi Hoho Prohibits Modifications to Traditional Attire and Ornaments
Zunheboto | July 2, 2025: The Sümi Totimi Hoho (STH) has issued a formal directive prohibiting any unauthorized alterations or modern reinterpretations of Sümi traditional attire and ornaments. The move aims to safeguard the authenticity and integrity of the Sümi cultural heritage.
The announcement, made through an official press release dated July 2, 2025, follows a resolution passed by the STH Executive Council on June 6, 2025, at Sümi Hoho Ki. The directive is grounded in Article 4(d), (e), and (f) of the STH Constitution, which explicitly outlines:
- The use, protection, and preservation of traditional Sümi attire
- Restrictions on any form of modification or misuse of traditional clothing and ornaments
- Prohibition against creating new variants such as wraparounds or shawls without prior approval from the STH
“It is hereby decreed that no individual, group, or designer shall create or make any modification to the Sümi traditional attire and ornaments without the official permission from the STH,” the statement reads. Violators will be held accountable and may face penalties as imposed by the Hoho.
The STH expressed concern over increasing unauthorized adaptations that threaten to erode cultural identity and authenticity. Such actions, the Hoho warns, contribute to confusion and a gradual loss of the original essence of the Sümi heritage.
Since its establishment, the Sümi Totimi Hoho has consistently upheld its mission to honor, preserve, and promote the cultural legacy of the Sümi people. The organization remains committed to guiding designers and cultural practitioners in adhering to traditional standards.
The STH encouraged open collaboration from individuals and groups who wish to contribute positively to the preservation of traditional attire. “We are happy to provide guidance and support to ensure that your design meets the set requirements,” the statement concludes.
