The NSCN-K press statement dated February 21, 2026, was issued by the Ministry of Information and Publicity, Government of the People’s Republic of Nagaland (GPRN). It responds to what it describes as false and fabricated allegations against its Ang Mai-led leadership. In addition, it addresses developments concerning the Yung Aung–Joseph Lamkang group.
Response to Allegations
The statement says that over the past several years, allegations have been made against NSCN-K (Ang Mai-led) leaders. It claims that efforts were made to resolve differences through dialogue. For example, they sent trusted emissaries and civil society leaders to engage with Yung Aung. However, the organization alleges that such efforts did not result in constructive engagement.
According to the statement, the leadership decided to make public what it termed “open falsehoods.” This followed continued disputes and internal disagreements.
Leadership Disputes and Organizational Changes
The press note recounts events following the demise of late Chairman Baba Khaplang. It claims that Yung Aung assumed leadership under disputed circumstances. It also states that subsequent actions led to expulsions of several senior leaders, including Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Ang Mai and others. Also Read NSCN-K Claims Responsibility for Tizit Killing
The statement further alleges that the YA-JL group has centralized authority, describing the present functioning as lacking collective leadership. It also states that Gen. Kumchok, Commander-in-Chief, has been sidelined, while Joseph Lamkang serves as deputy and MIP Minister.
Claims Over Identity and Background
The statement references circulating media claims questioning Yung Aung’s identity and background. It notes that some reports have alleged he may not be a Naga by blood. Concerns Over Policy and External Relations
The press statement asserts that during Baba Khaplang’s leadership, NSCN-K had influence across Myanmar, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and other regions. It alleges that recent policies under the YA-JL group have led to fragmentation and weakening of the organization’s foundation.
The document also claims that the YA-JL group has mobilized opposition against the proposed re-establishment of the historic Stilwell Road project. This project passes through Naga-inhabited areas. In addition, the group has discouraged support for a bilateral ceasefire agreement between NSCN-K and the Myanmar Union. Also Read Proclamation Issued Against Niki Sumi President NSCN K
