A controversial stage performance during the 14th August Naga Independence Day celebrations at Phungyar has drawn widespread public criticism, prompting the NSCN’s Ministry of Information and Publicity to issue an official clarification.
The event featured a group dance performance in minimal athletic attire, which many viewers described as inappropriate for the solemn and formal nature of the occasion. Photos and videos of the act quickly circulated online, with large sections of the Naga public expressing strong disapproval and questioning the organisers’ judgment. NSCN’s Official Response
In a statement released on August 15, the Ministry acknowledged that “certain portions of the programme were inappropriate” and did not reflect the values and decorum expected during an Independence Day celebration.
The clarification stressed that the performance in question had neither been reviewed nor approved by higher authorities and was arranged independently by the programme organisers without prior knowledge of the presiding officials. The Ministry expressed regret for any discomfort caused to guests, dignitaries, and the public, and assured that future programmes will undergo stricter pre-event review to maintain formal and respectful standards.
