The Kohima Police have cracked the mysterious Kohima murder case involving the brutal death of 22-year-old Vihozhonu Zao, whose body was discovered on October 25 in Kohima. Weeks of investigation led to the arrest of her adoptive uncle, Samuel Zao, who has now confessed to committing the crime in a sudden burst of anger over a cup of tea.
Murder Over a Cup of Tea
According to Kohima Police, the incident occurred inside the family residence on the night of October 24. The accused, a Nepali national adopted into the family by one of the victim’s aunts, had asked Vihozhonu to prepare tea. Investigators said the act was not premeditated, describing it as a crime of sudden anger. Injury marks and broken fingers on the victim’s body indicate she fought back during the attack. Authorities also confirmed there were no signs of sexual assault after forensic examination.
How the Police Cracked the Case
Initially, the murder was considered a blind case with no immediate leads. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kohima Police took over the probe, collecting forensic samples and reconstructing the crime scene. After analyzing physical evidence and witness statements, the SIT identified Samuel Zao as the prime suspect.
Following interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime and explained how he tried to destroy evidence. He removed the SIM card from the victim’s phone, smashed the device, and threw it into a municipal truck. He also used a sweater to clean the blood and later discarded both the sweater and other blood-stained materials in a nearby gutter and ring well.

Police described the case’s breakthrough as a result of meticulous investigation and forensic follow-up. The confession brings closure to a case that had left Kohima residents shocked and grieving for weeks.
