The Manipur internet shutdown has formally come into effect in Ukhrul district. This comes after the state government issued an official order suspending mobile data and broadband services for five days. The authorities cite serious law and order concerns. Moreover, they mention the risk of misinformation spreading through social media.

The shutdown follows a sequence of administrative actions beginning at the district level. It culminates in a legally binding order from the Manipur Home Department. This marks one of the first major governance decisions after the BJP’s return to power in the state.

District Administration Flagged Rising Tensions

On February 10, 2026, the District Magistrate of Ukhrul formally wrote to the Manipur Home Department requesting the immediate suspension of internet services across the district. The letter cited “significant disturbances” and warned that the prevailing situation posed a direct threat to public safety and peace. The district administration noted that unchecked circulation of rumours and misinformation could further escalate tensions. This could complicate efforts to maintain law and order on the ground.

State Government Issues Five-Day Shutdown Order

Acting on the district’s request, the Government of Manipur, Home Department, issued an official order on the same day directing the suspension and curbing of internet and data services. This includes broadband, VPN, and VSAT, across the entire revenue jurisdiction of Ukhrul district. Also read Kuki-Zo vs Young Kuki Over Ancestral Land

The order invokes powers under the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024. It states that the decision was taken as a preventive and precautionary measure to avoid loss of life, damage to public or private property, and disruption of communal harmony.

The shutdown came into force at 11:30 AM on February 10, 2026, and is scheduled to remain in effect for five days. However, this timeline may change, as it can be extended or withdrawn earlier.

Government Cites Risk of Social Media Misuse

In its order, the Home Department highlighted concerns that anti-social elements could use social media platforms to transmit images, videos, and messages. These could incite public emotions and aggravate the situation.

Authorities warned that false rumours and inflammatory content circulated through mobile internet, SMS, and messaging services could lead to widespread disturbances, making internet suspension necessary to stabilise the situation. Also read Why Nagaland Citizens Fear Reporting Crime

Service Providers Directed to Comply

All internet and mobile service providers operating in Manipur have been directed to ensure strict compliance with the shutdown order. The government also warned that violations of the order would attract legal action under applicable laws.

The order was passed ex parte due to what the government described as an “emergent situation.” Additionally, it has been directed to be published through press and electronic media for public awareness.

Political Context Draws Attention

The timing of the Ukhrul internet ban has drawn attention, as it coincides with the BJP’s renewed control in Manipur. While the government maintains that the decision is purely administrative and driven by security concerns, critics argue that frequent internet shutdowns have increasingly become a standard response during periods of political or social unrest. Internet restrictions in Manipur have previously been criticised by civil society groups for impacting access to information, communication, and essential digital services.

Uncertainty Over Restoration

As of now, no official clarification has been issued regarding the possibility of early restoration of services. Residents have been advised to rely on official government channels for updates and to avoid spreading unverified information offline.
