A Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into a school building in Dhaka’s Uttara area on Monday afternoon, killing at least 19 people and injuring over 100, many of them students. The incident occurred during school hours, sending shockwaves across the country and prompting a national day of mourning.
What Happened
The aircraft, identified as a Chengdu F-7 BGI — a Chinese-built fighter jet — took off from BAF Base Bir Uttom A.K. Khandker at around 1:06 p.m. for a routine training mission. According to official statements, it suffered a sudden technical malfunction shortly after takeoff and crashed into Milestone School and College, a private institution located in the densely populated Uttara neighborhood.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion followed by plumes of smoke rising from the school compound. Local residents rushed to the scene as flames engulfed the building.

The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md. Toukir Islam, was among the 19 people confirmed dead. At least 100 others were injured, including a large number of schoolchildren. Many were treated for severe burn injuries, with over 60 rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

Government’s Reaction
Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, declared a national day of mourning and announced a full investigation into the crash. “This is a dark day for our nation. We offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The government will ensure all necessary medical and financial support,” he stated.
Bangladesh Air Force officials confirmed that a high-level inquiry committee has been formed to examine the flight logs, communication records, and aircraft maintenance history.
International Reactions
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed solidarity with Bangladesh in a social media post, stating, “India stands with the people of Bangladesh during this tragic moment.” Messages of condolence also poured in from several neighboring countries.
