A Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into a school building in Dhaka’s Uttara area on Monday afternoon, killing at least 19 people and injuring over 100, many of them students. The incident occurred during school hours, sending shockwaves across the country and prompting a national day of mourning.
What Happened
The aircraft, identified as a Chengdu F-7 BGI — a Chinese-built fighter jet — took off from BAF Base Bir Uttom A.K. Khandker at around 1:06 p.m. for a routine training mission. According to official statements, it suffered a sudden technical malfunction shortly after takeoff and crashed into Milestone School and College, a private institution located in the densely populated Uttara neighborhood.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion followed by plumes of smoke rising from the school compound. Local residents rushed to the scene as flames engulfed the building.
Casualties and Injuries
The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md. Toukir Islam, was among the 19 people confirmed dead. At least 100 others were injured, including a large number of schoolchildren. Many were treated for severe burn injuries, with over 60 rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Several victims remain in critical condition, and rescue teams continued to search for survivors beneath the debris. Parents, teachers, and residents joined emergency services in frantic efforts to evacuate children from the wreckage.
Emergency Response
Firefighters, police, paramilitary forces, and medical teams responded swiftly to the crash site. Authorities cordoned off the area and launched extensive rescue and recovery operations. Videos shared on social media showed chaotic scenes, with children being carried out of classrooms and volunteers using makeshift stretchers to transport the wounded.
The blaze was brought under control after an hour, but damage to the school building was extensive.
Pilot’s Last Move
According to military officials, Flight Lt. Toukir Islam attempted to steer the aircraft away from the main populated zones, likely preventing even greater loss of life. His last-minute maneuver redirected the jet away from residential areas and toward a school courtyard, although it ultimately struck an academic block.
Government’s Reaction
Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, declared a national day of mourning and announced a full investigation into the crash. “This is a dark day for our nation. We offer our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. The government will ensure all necessary medical and financial support,” he stated.
Bangladesh Air Force officials confirmed that a high-level inquiry committee has been formed to examine the flight logs, communication records, and aircraft maintenance history.
International Reactions
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed solidarity with Bangladesh in a social media post, stating, “India stands with the people of Bangladesh during this tragic moment.” Messages of condolence also poured in from several neighboring countries.
School and Community Impact
Classes have been suspended indefinitely at Milestone School & College. Counselors and trauma specialists have been dispatched to support students, staff, and families coping with the aftermath.
Local community leaders called for stricter regulations regarding military flight paths over densely populated areas, citing safety concerns for civilians.
Investigation Underway
The crash marks one of the deadliest aviation incidents involving the Bangladesh military in recent history. Though rare, the country has witnessed several aircraft accidents over the years. Experts say this tragedy could lead to a reassessment of training protocols and emergency preparedness, especially in urban airspaces.
The investigation is expected to continue over the coming weeks, with updates to be released by the Bangladesh Air Force and the Ministry of Defence.
